FAQs

What does “Applied Solar” mean?

We define applied solar as leveraging solar technology to solve specific real world problems. This means that we aren’t focused on installing solar panels on rooftops to power homes or businesses. We are focused on using solar to solve specific problems such as our first use case pre-cooling.

What are your professional backgrounds?

The team at SolarX|Works has experience in both the solar and cold storage industries, holding—a variety of management and executive positions. This expertise in both industries helps set us up for success in bringing xCOLD to market as a viable cooling option in the cold chain. Learn more on our Team page.

What is your first product?

Our first product that we are taking to market is the solar-powered xCOLD refrigeration system. It is a highly mobile, flexible, and space-agnostic refrigeration system that can run 100% on solar power but is also capable of running on multiple power sources in parallel (such as battery, shore power, generator).

How cold can the xCOLD get?

The current xCOLD has produced temperatures down to 17°F (-8°C). However, it is also smart enough to maintain temperatures above this such as if you need to maintain a space as a refrigerator or an air-conditioned space.

What space is the xcold designed to keep cold?

We designed the xCOLD to be space agnostic—meaning that it can be attached to any space and start blowing cold air. However, the size of the space and its insulation will determine how cold the xCOLD can maintain. The xCOLD produces 24,000 BTUs (2 RT) of cooling and was sized to keep a standard 20’ insulated shipping container at freezer temperatures.

What is the price of the xCOLD?

The current xCOLD prototype unit can be manufactured and sold today, but because we currently build them in small quantities, the price has to reflect that. As we move into the manufacturing phase of xCOLD, we will be able to produce the xCOLD at scale and bring the price down to be competitive with conventional refrigeration systems of the same size. If you would like more information, contact us directly and we will get back to you ASAP!

Where are you in the development cycle?

We currently have a working prototype design that is being field tested as we speak. The next step in the development cycle is to work with a fabrication company to redesign the xCOLD for mass production.

How can I help?

At the current stage in our business evolution, we are looking for engineering expertise (control systems, electrical, solar) and fabrication assistance as we take the xCOLD product to scale. We are also looking for additional investment in our company—if you are interested in learning more or know someone who may be interested in investing please send us a message through our Contact form.
